Using Semi-colons

Recently we have been learning how to use semi-colons accurately. Take a look at this picture; it uses commas where a semi colon would have been a better option.

A semi colon can be used to separate two main clauses in a sentence

e.g. The girl ran; she was being chased.

A semi colon can be used to add an additional main clause to a more complex sentence.

e.g. As I arrived home from school, the dog was barking because he had heard strange noises in the cellar; he was very unsettled.

In these cases the word after the semi-colon must refer to the subject in the main sentence.

Take a look at these descriptive paragraphs we have written. They all contain semi-colons which have been used successfully as described above.
