This week in 6S we have been thinking more about microorganisms and how they can be helpful as well as harmful. We know that microorganisms cause bread to rise, are used in the production of yoghurt and cheese, help break down waste, aid our digestion and clean sewage water. We wanted to find out the conditions that yeast, a type of fungus, needs to work well.
We set up investigations to find out whether cold, warm or hot water would be best, and to find out the optimum amount of sugar. We learnt the importance of changing one variable at a time when table 5 accidentally changed both variables. We observed either the height of the froth produced or the amount of carbon dioxide produced (using balloons).
We had some very exciting moments when the lids of the jars kept popping off on Table 1 and Table 2 and when Table 4’s yeast overflowed!
We found out that warm water and plenty of sugar caused the yeast to produce the most gas and rise the most. If the water was too hot, it killed the microorganisms.
In English this week, we have been writing and redrafting our instruction texts. We have worked on how to edit our own work and give feedback to someone else. We have particularly been focusing on our vocabulary choices and correct sentence punctuation.
In maths we have been practising our formal methods for addition, subtraction and multiplication. Next week we will be looking at division. It would be really useful for children to practise their times tables facts over the weekend.
Children have brought home some maths homework on negative numbers. Remember to think about the hot air balloon game we played to help solve the trickier problems!
Children also have some spellings to practise.
