The Gift of the Magi
Friday 8th December |
This week, we have been learning the story, The Gift of the Magi, written by American author O. Henry in 1905. It is a difficult story to read but the children have shown real determination and commitment to learning new vocabulary and deciphering the complex language. We had a wonderful “light bulb moment” when the twist at the end of the story was revealed. Everyone enjoyed the moral of the story about how the best gifts are given with love and sacrifice. Please ask your child to tell you the story.
Later in the week, we talked about adaptations of well-known stories and how important it is to be familiar with classics stories and recognise them when they pop up in other forms. We thoroughly enjoyed watching and discussing two modern adaptations of the story, Mickey Mouse and Sesame Street, and how they teach younger children about giving.
